Ministry plans to reduce carbon emission to 137 Metric tons

Addis Ababa, 27 November 2015 (WIC)–  The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said it has planned to reduce carbon emission to 137 metric tons during the second GTP period.

Public Relations Directorate Director with the Ministry, Debasu Bayleyegn, told WIC that the Ministry is intensively working to reduce carbon emission from 150 metric tons to 137 before 2020.

According to Debasu, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change encourages countries to reduce carbon emission by purchasing from 5 to 15 USD per one ton of carbon. But Ethiopia is pretty dedicated to assure green economy and realize food security at national level and can attain this goal, he noted.

He further said 40 percent of the Ethiopian topography is mountainous and needs hard work to be cultivated and foster environmental development.

It is indicated in the Ministry’s road map that the Amhara, Oromiya and Tigray regions are parts of the country that have lost their vegetation cover considerably.

Ethiopian forest coverage currently has reached 15.5 percent out of the total land as data taken from the satellite indicated. The Ministry has targeted to maximize the coverage to 20 percent during the second GTP.

Walta has learnt that the forest resource expected to share 8 percent of GDP in the second GTP.
