Terrorism poses threat that transcends every imaginable boundary: Getachew Reda

Addis Ababa, 18 January 2016 (WIC) – The threat posed by Al Qaeda and Daesh is a threat that transcends every imaginable boundary said the Minister of Ethiopian Government Communication Affairs Office (GCAO) in an exclusive interview with Anadolu.

The threat posed by Al Qaeda and Daesh is not a threat to this or that country alone. It is a threat that transcends every imaginable boundary said Getachew Reda. These groups are entrenching in the wider region, to which we are a part. So, we feel the urge to join forces to fight and repel them, he added.

According to the minster, Ethiopia considers Al Shabaab and al-Qaeda or even Daesh as birds of the same feather. They all are terrorists. Their deeds does not tally with the principles enshrined in any religion; leave alone Islam which is a religion of peace, said the minster.

Those who claimed to be proponents of Al-Qaeda in the past are now claiming that they are aligned with Daesh. Ethiopia sees this very seriously. It is a cause of great concern since it is a big threat to our security, said Getachew.

The minister said that Ethiopia cannot see the security of the Gulf region separately from the security of the Horn of Africa. Absence of security in one region directly affects conditions in the other region. We cooperate in the area of security. Security in Somalia and Yemen has a direct bearing on the security of the Gulf nations and also those in the Horn of Africa region. In this regard, Ethiopia commends the cooperation from Saudi and the United Arab Emirates.
