Ethiopia plans to export potassium during GTP II

Addis Ababa, 23 January, 2016 (WIC) – Ethiopia plans to export Potassium during the implementation course of second Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP II), the Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Natural Gas noted.

Public relations head of the ministry, Bacha Faji, told Walta Information Center that ministry has been exerting its efforts in facilitating the development of the resource during the course of the first GTP. The ministry effort in the past will be fruitful during the course of the second GTP, he said.

According to Bacha, three companies have been in the process of potassium development during the implementation course of GTP I. He added that the companies have been carrying out research and feasibility studies in sites in Afar Region.

Yara Dallol, Allana Potash and Circum Millennia have been in the country for years to undertake the potassium development work.

Bacha told Walta that Yara Dallol has finalized the feasibility studies and expected to start production with in short time. The completion of different infrastructures across the projects site will open the way for the commencement of the company, he added.

The development of the resources provides the country an alternative means to secure hard currency apart from providing inputs for fertilizer factories in the process of development and chemical industries in the country.
