Media should stand for right, benefit of the people: Government

 The Government Communication Affairs Office urged the media institutions operating in the country to stand for the right and benefit of the people.

The office made this remark in a discussion forum themed “strong media for, peace, development and democratization.”

Speaking at the forum, Office head Negeri Lencho said this time Ethiopia needs a media house dedicated for right and benefit of the people.

He also said the media and its practitioners should be ethical so that they will be able to provide the people with strong works.

He urged the media to be responsible and trustful for the people by disseminating balanced and factual stories and be ready to fill the gaps witnessed in terms of reliable information provision.

 Tamrat Dejene, who presented a paper titled “The problem of the country’s media mission and solutions”, said that the country’s media reports on developmental political thinking in contrast to that of neoliberal media.

The country’s media should not fail in the trap of wealthy people and some individuals and rather should give coverage to people living in small business and for farmers, he said.

According to him, a nationwide media reform is underway.

 The media should work hard towards national consensus and prevalence of rule of law, he said adding the government will not abstain from providing them with support.

The forum, which was jointly presided by Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen and Minister Negeri Lencho saw minsters an media practitioners in attendance.
