Ethiopia marked the 10th Democracy and Conflict Prevention Day in an event organized at the House of Peoples Representatives.
The event saw the attendance of leaders of the country’s civil societies, democratic institutions including the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Ethiopian Human Right Commission(HRC).
Opening the event, Government Whip, State Minster Meles Tilahoun said that democracy is at the center of the country's economic and political development the government keep giving priority.
To this effect, he said the role of democratic institution in the process of democratization is too essential.
He said that empowering women, insuring the rule of law and fair distribution of wealth are a fundamentals to for democracy to prevail and become sustainable.
He also said that democracy is vital to ensure tolerance and equality among the country’s nations and nationalities.
Deputy Commissioner, Ubah Mohammed, also presented a paper titled, “The role of democracy in conflict Resolution.”
In her presentation she said that conflict are “ natural Phenomenon,” which could happen in nay part of the world and can be used an “opportunity” to develop strong conflict resolution mechanism.
The Commissioner, Dr. Adisu Gebreegzabiher allued to what Ubah said when it comes to nature of conflict and ways of possible resolutions.
He said that the country lacks in analyzing early warning of conflicts, which could be thwarted from the beginning.
According to him, the constitution shall be participially implemented to ensure democracy, peace and development in the way of creating one political community in the country.
The day marked for 11th time around the world.
