The Federal Prosecutor has indicated that the charges of Bekele Gerba and seven other prisoners, suspected of participating in the recently unfolded unrest in the country, are acquitted.

Pursuant to the EPRDF’s Central Committee decision to acquit charges and pardon those suspected of taking part in violence, terrorism and other issues, the federal prosecutor has acquitted charges and pardoned hundreds of prisoners since last month.

According to the Federal Prosecutor, charges against Bekele Gerba, Gurmessa Ayano, Addisu Bulala, Dejene Tafa, Getu Garuma, Tesfaye Liben and Beyene Ruda are acquitted.

However, as the suspects were twice caught in contempt of court and are facing a yearlong punishment with imprisonment, their release is expected to be decided by the board of pardon, and ratified by the President.
