Attorney General arranges discussion on fake news, hates speech draft law

The Federal Attorney General today arranged a discussion with concerned stakeholders on the fake news and hate speech draft proclamation.

The draft proclamation is expected to appear before the House of Peoples’ Representatives after important inputs get incorporated.

On the discussion, political parties, bloggers and media entities and law practitioners as well got attracted.

Once the draft got ratified, it will be useful to take legal measures against individuals who spread hate speech and fake news via print, broadcast and social media outlets.

Deputy Attorney General, Gedion Timotious (PhD) said that necessary precaution was made to make sure that the law will not contravene freedom of the press.

The participants, who appreciated the coming into being of law, also expressed concerns that it may limit freedom of the press.

The media, religious institutions and Ethiopian Human right Commission to work to curb hate speech directed to people on the basis of color, ethnicity or languages.
