Joint task force briefs on current affairs, arrests 255 Suspects of coup attempt

The Security and Justice Joint Task Force arrested a total of 255 suspects in connection with last Saturday’s coup attempt.

Chief Administrator of Amhara regional state, Dr Ambachew Mekonnen and his advisor Eizez Wasie as well as Attorney General of the regional state, Migbaru Kebede were killed in the coup attempt in Bahir Dar, the regional states capital.

Chief of Staff of the National Defense Force, General Seare Mekonnen, along with Major General Geza’e Abera, was killed by his bodyguard at his home in the capital Addis Ababa.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Task Force said 212 fully armed suspects in Bahir Dar and 43 suspects in Addis Ababa had been arrested in connection with the coup attempt and they are being investigated.

Two machineguns, 27 Kalashnikov rifles and several pistols, including bullets and documents were also seized in Addis Ababa, according to the statement.

The task force said Brigadier General Asaminew Tsige, who orchestrated the coup attempt in Amhara regional state was killed by joint efforts of the region’s special force and the residents.
