Effort to inculcate Gada system on world heritage list yields results

Addis Ababa, August 10, 2016 (WIC) –The efforts being made to inscribe the Gada system on UNESCO’s world heritage list are yielding positive results, said the Oromia Regional State Culture and Tourism Bureau.

The Gada system is an indigenous democratic and socio-political system of the Oromo people. It is also traditional conflict resolution system.

The government has been making efforts to inscribe this system on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity list.

“The ongoing efforts are paying off,” said Getu Weyesa, Head of the State’s Culture and Tourism Bureau.

The registration on the world heritage list has a significant contribution for the preservation of the system, attract tourists and to conduct researches, he said.

Getu further said preparations have been launched to colorfully celebrate Irreecha (thanksgiving) in Bishoftu, on October 2, 2016.

More than 3 million people are expected to attend the festival, he added. (FBC)
