Tigray strives to register Ashenda as world intangible heritage

22 August 2016 (WIC)The Tigray Regional State Communication Affairs Bureau has announced that efforts to register Ashenda, traditional festival celebrated by people in Tigray to mark the end of fasting, as an intangible world heritage is strengthened .

Head of the bureau, Gebremichael Meles, said that efforts to register Ashenda as an intangible world heritage is getting momentum.

He noted that officials of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) were at Mekelle last year.

Gebremichael said that the officials were able to understand the enabling environment on the ground to register Ashenda as an intangible world heritage.

During their official visit, they have recognized the uniqueness of Ashenda festivals; where women have every right to express themselves in every way possible, said Gebremikael. 

According to the bureau head, the regional state has made necessary preparations to colorfully celebrate the recognition ceremony.

He said that especial ceremonies will be held at Mekelle and Abiy Adi town for the official recognition the festival. 

Gebremichael said that international media houses like the Associated Press, Anadolu, Reuters and CCTV have entered Mekelle to let the world know about the recognition. 

A panel discussion concerning the origin and development of Ashenda will be held in a festival slated to takes place for more than a week.
