Police impound a vehicle carrying 26 Ethiopians in Malawi

Malawi Police in Karonga district on Monday night  stopped  a vehicle  and led off a group of 26 Ethiopian national, believed to have smuggled themselves into the country.

Karonga police deputy spokesperson George Mlewa confimed they swooped on the vehicle, presumably following a tip-off..

According to him, the suspects were coming from Chitipa heading to Karonga district, using Karonga-Chitipa M1 road.

However, after noticing that the police had mounted  a make-shift roadblock, the vehicle changed its direction to Karonga Airport and then Katili.

“Police officers started following the vehicle and upon reacing  Katili area,the driver stopped the vehicle and run away to a nearby bush together with the Ethiopians,” said Mlewa.

Police started hunting for the group and managed to arrest 26 Ethiopians and impounded the vehicle.

He said the vehicle, a Fuso Fighter registration number TO 5846 belonges to Mr Amedi Hassan Abub of Dowa.

According to Mlewa, the suspects who are between the age of 25-35 years  looked “distraught” to have been caught.(Nyasa Times)
