Afar buckles up to contain floods

The Afar regional state, prone to sudden torrential floods, has indicated that it has made preparations to contain possible effects of unexpected floods during this rainy season, according to the Regional Disaster Prevention and Food Security Coordination Office.

Office Head, Mohammed Hussien, told WMC that the national data of weather forecast has already warned on the possibility of unexpected floods from heavy rainfall that might happen a few days later in some areas of the region.

The flood might make about 63 thousand people residing in 21 woredas of the regions vulnerable to different effects, he noted.

The office also has established a separate committee to be responsible for preventing the possible effects of the flood. Preparation is finalized to supply possible water, medical support, food aid and other backings in case people face the challenge.
