Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches management requests lift of metal shelters

The Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches Management has requested government to lift the metal shelters.

Heritage Manager with the Church Degu Kegn Geta told Walta that metal shelters were meant to shield the churches from winds and sun light, but conversely incurring vibrations during windy weather that leads for damages.

According to Degu, despite the church complains five years ago, the concerned body has not responded yet. Consequently, unless the metal shelters are removed earlier as possible they may damage the churches, he added.

It was noted that some heritage professionals have recommended for the lift of the metal shelters, but not resolved so far. The government shall take measures and solutions before it is too late, he added.

The Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches are attributed to King Lalibela who set out to construct in the 12th century in a mountainous region in the heart of Ethiopia, some 645 km from Addis Ababa.
