Association shifts role to reduce trans-fat from food

The Health Development and Anti-Malaria Association have shifted a role from malaria protection to deal trans-fat, which has been appeared as new human health threat.

The Association held a meeting today amid at raising awareness about the negative impacts and how to substantially reduce the content of fat from the food.

Opening the meeting, Executive Director of the Association, Dr. Abere Mihret said that the association was came into being some 20 years ago to eradicate the malaria epidemic, and it was successful.

He said that now the association shifted its role from malaria to other health sectors strains appeared to be threat of human health.

The reduction of the trans-fat from food, which about 90 percent is imported with palm oil, is the new task, Dr. Abere said.

Around 540 thousand people are reported to be died from trans-fat related complication annually.
