AU Commission Chair urges implementation of decision on financing union

 Chairperson of African Union Commission urged today all member states to implement the 0.2 percent levy on imports of eligible products in order to ensure in predictable, sustainable and equitable financing of the AU.

Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat made the remark at the opening of the 29th AU Summit at the AU Headquarters here.

According to him, some member states have already taken concrete measures for the implementation of the decision.

He said “the integral and speeding of the implementation of this decision constitute factor and element of credibility, effectiveness of our action including the implementation of Agenda 2063."

Furthermore, Mahamat stated that the summit is being held at a time when political crisis and conflict remain the major sources of concern for the continent.

Therefore, the peace situation in Libya, Mali, Central Africa, Burundi, Congo, Somalia, Darfur and South Sudan as well as migration issues will engage the attention of summit, he added.

“Each one of them calls for determined effort to find political solutions for the problems that hold the countries,” he stressed.

Member states need to also redouble their efforts to fight against terrorism and extremism that affect the entire continent, according to the chirperson.

On other hand, the chairperson said “we need to improve our future prosperity over the youth and we need to accelerate the implementation of continental free trade (CFT) which is crucial for the development of the continent.”

He highlighted that the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) underway will focus on the preparation of the convening of the session of the Executive Council.

Chairpesron of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee, Ambassador Fatoumata Kaba of Guinea said on her part the committee should endeavor to bring clear decision to the session of Executive Council.

She called on the PRC members to be comprehensive and clear when taking decisions and recommendations on the various reports. (ENA)
