Africa should accelerate adaptation to climate change-UNDP

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) said that countries in Africa should understand the impacts climate change on weather patterns, availability of water and farm land usage.

"UNDP has a very strong push forward to the African climate change adaptation initiative and many people across the continent know know that climate adaptation is a reality"   UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner told journalist in the sideline of African Union Summit being underway in Addis Ababa.

He said that governments, communities and businesses have to invest on the effort to contain the adversary impact of climate change and accelerate climate adaptation.

He said that the government of Gabon contributed 500 thousand dollars to African climate adaptation, which could be invested in 47 African countries via the UNDP.

Other African countries are urged to follow suit, What Gabon did.

"We will mobilize more funds," he said adding that the UNDP is working in Africa to "build the capacity of institutions in adapting measures to dealing with climate change."

 He also addressed climate change "as existential issue" and urged countries to invest on renewable energy potential so that Agenda 2063, the AU development program, will be met.
