IGAD holds discussion on revitalization forum to South Sudan

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) council ministers have discussed on revitalization forum to restore peace and stability in South Sudan.

The council in its 59th Extra-ordinary session has discussed on the report of the IGAD’s special Envoy’s Team and the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Committee (JMEC) which was started six months ago and successfully concluded today.

Minister of Ethiopian Foreign Affairs and Chairperson of the IGAD Council of Ministers, Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD), in his opening remarks noted that IGAD has been resilient and has come together to resolve problems and stands up for Africans when and where needed.

Workneh added that he is confident and optimistic that coordinated and firm support of stakeholders will lead to realize the revitalization forum to fruition.

He also called up on the South Sudanese political leaders to have a clear vision, genuine political will and a desire to heal agonies and suffering of the people of south Sudan. On the other hand, failure to do so by the political leaders results in a serious consequence to themselves and will negatively affects South Sudan at large, he underlined. 

“If you cannot resolve your problems in peace, you cannot resolve them by war” Workneh concluded.

The African Union Commission, European Union, United Nations and other international organizations have shown support to pave the way for South Sudanese peace and stability by supporting the revitalization forum initiative.

According to sources, Ethiopia is hosting over 330,000 south Sudanese refugees.

Walta has learnt that South Sudan has gained its independence from the Republic of the Sudan in 2011.
