Gebisa Ejeta receives $5 mln for research achievements

An Ethiopian-American Plant Breeder, Geneticist and Professor at Purdue University, Gebisa Ejeta (PhD) has received 5 million dollars from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana State, USA to promote his contributions and achievements in sorghum breeding research.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has handed over the award to Gebisa. The foundation has awarded donations so far.

Gebisa said that such recognitions will enhance to strengthen his research to reach to other developing countries in the future.

It was noted that the research of Gebisa and his colleagues undertaking plays a significant role to demolish sponging weed and also to improve the production of sorghum at large.

Ejeta has won the 2009 World Food Prize in Des Moines, Iowa, for his contribution in the world's food needs, it was noted.

World Food Prize is highly regarded award for scientists and researchers for their deeds in helping to improve food supply and quality.
