AU Executive Council Convenes its 22nd Extraordinary Meeting

Addis Ababa, March 16, 2024(Addis Walta) Addis Ababa hosts the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council, a pivotal gathering focusing on the upcoming election of the senior leadership of the Union, set for February 2025.

This session is particularly significant as it reviews a comprehensive report of the Permanent Representative Committee of the AU on the preparations leading up to this crucial election.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Mohamed Salem Ould, Foreign Minister of Mauritania and Chairperson of the Executive Council, emphasized the importance of the forthcoming election.

In his remarks at the meeting, Amb. Taye Atske-Selassie, Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, emphasized the importance of ensuring the election to the senior leadership posts of the commission is conducted to uphold the union’s integrity and adhere to the established guiding principles and rules while also employing a pragmatic approach to ensure the smooth functioning of the institution.

He also underscored the need to keep the unity among African countries for maintaining the continent’s cohesion and strengthening of the Commission.

This gathering in Addis Ababa marks a critical step toward strengthening Africa’s role in global affairs and ensuring a stable and prosperous future for the continent.
