EGE Launches Website to Track, Record Acts of Violence Against Journalists

Addis Ababa, March 14, 2024(Addis Walta) The Editors Guild of Ethiopia (EGE) launched sojethiopia.org, the first website in the country to track and record acts of violence against journalists today.

The Editors Guild of Ethiopia developed this website with the support of UNESCO in three languages: Amharic, Affan Oromo, and English.

According to the association, the website addresses the issue of violence against journalists and mass communication institutions, including but not limited to intimidation, threats, workplace sealing and license prohibition, sexual assault, and imprisonment.

By recording, investigating, and gathering resources for further investigation of defamation, insults, slander, and similar abuses on social media and other platforms, the media can play a crucial role in building a democratic society in Ethiopia while maintaining its independence.

sojethiopia.org Ethiopia is dedicated to monitoring and recording incidents of harassment and other similar incidents that occur to journalists while they are doing their work. Additionally, it provides a framework to confidentially record cases of sexual assault experienced by female journalists in their workplace and journalistic journeys.

This platform also helps in facilitating resolution processes in collaboration with partners.
