Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) urges to prosecute perpetrators who perpetrated and aggravated the attack by imposing or otherwise not preventing the attack on the innocent at Metekel Zone.

EHRC on its statement has stated that the attack on innocent people in Metekel Zone, Kuji Kebele and Bulen Woreda said ensuring the safety of the people is crucial and primary responsibility of the government.

The commission said that human rights protection in the region has been severely weakened and also stated that it has been monitoring the situation and talking to the victims.

Until the Commission investigated the situation, 36 victims were being treated at Bullen Hospital, it was confirmed that most of them were shot with guns and others were wounded with cursors.

In addition to the loss of life and limb in Kuji Kebele, the commission also received reports that crops and harvested fields had been set on fire.

Regarding the frequency of attacks in Benishangul Gumuz and the state’s human rights situation, EHRC has been urging strong cooperation and attention from the federal and regional governments to prevent the aggression but the attacks are said to be worsening in appearance and scale.

The commission also called for the immediate provision of medical and humanitarian assistance to the victims of the attack and the displacement, as well as for the proper investigation and prosecution of those who are responsible for the attack.
