Ethiopia Clarifies Position on ICHREE to EU Member States’ Ambassadors

Addis Ababa, February 03, 2023 (Walta) – Higher government officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Justice of Ethiopia gave clarification to ambassadors of European Union member states on “Policy Options for Transitional Justice in Ethiopia”.

Ethiopia’s Minister of Justice, Gedion Timotheos (Ph.D), reaffirmed Ethiopia’s firm commitment to the full implementation of the Pretoria-signed Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) and the subsequent agreements.

He gave a briefing to the ambassadors on the content of “Policy Options for Transitional Justice in Ethiopia,” a document prepared by Ethiopian government to address current socio-political realities of the country based on accountability, truth seeking, redress for victims, and reconciliation and healing.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Ambassador Misganu Arga, on his part, expressed his hope that the meeting would help to restore and strengthen the Ethio-EU relation.

Ambassador Misganu also stated Ethiopia’s stance on International Commission of Experts on Ethiopia (ICHREE).
He called for the suspension of the commission as its role undermines the Pretoria Peace Agreement, and cooperation between Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and the UNHCR.

The ambassadors expressed their appreciation on Ethiopia’s openness to cooperating with the EU on accountability and issues needing clarification.
