Ethiopia Earns Over $896 mln from Coffee Export

Addis Ababa, May 03, 2023 (Walta) – Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) announced that Ethiopia earned over 889 million USD from exporting coffee in the last 9 months of budget year.

Marketing Development and Promotion Head of the authority, Kassahun Geleta said that ECTA planned to earn 1.9 billion USD by exporting 243,659 tons of coffee within 9 months. However, it managed to get 896.7 million USD by exporting 163,666 tons of coffee. By this, it only achieved 65% of the target export amount and 75% of income for the period.

Therefore, the number, compared with last year’s similar period achievement, has slightly fallen short. Hence a 22.4% decline in the export amount is recorded although the income increased by 2.36 million.

Coffee price fluctuations in the world market, especially a 20 to 25 percent decline since October, a decline in demand from buyers, and transport disruption were the challenges for the underperformance in the coffee export, according to EPA.
