Addis Ababa, May 9, 2024 (Addis Walta) Ethiopia and Germany have recently reaffirmed their commitment to work together in preventing climate change.
During a meeting between Seyoum Mekonnen, the State Minister of the Ministry of Planning and Development of Ethiopia, and Jennifer Lee Morgan, Germany’s State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action, both sides reiterated their dedication to the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Key areas of intervention included renewable energy development and enhancing energy accessibility.
Ethiopia’s investments in hydropower projects, such as the GERD and Koisha hydroelectric projects, were praised for their potential to boost energy accessibility for Ethiopians. The Green Legacy Initiative was also commended for its significant contribution to sustainability and the effectiveness of its projects.
Germany expressed strong interest in supporting Ethiopia’s ambitious renewable energy initiatives. The two sides discussed collaboration on NDC and Climate Finance, as well as Ethiopia’s forthcoming updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) expected in 2025.
Plans were outlined for reviewing achievements and shortfalls of the existing NDC, emphasizing the need for climate finance accessibility and the capacity to mobilize resources from available sources. Innovative financing mechanisms were also considered, including fostering private sector involvement in climate change solutions and green growth.
Germany committed to ongoing support for bolstering stakeholder engagement and capacity building in Ethiopia, particularly in the establishment of a robust climate information/knowledge system. This was deemed essential for informed decision-making and effective policy implementation.
The meeting concluded with a resolute commitment from Germany and Ethiopia to intensify collaboration and work closely to accelerate climate action and achieve their mutual objectives at national and regional level initiatives.
