Ethiopia Officially Commences GERD’s Electric Power Generation

Addis Ababa, February 20, 2022 (Walta) – Ethiopia has officially commenced electric power generation of the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD) with the 375 megawatt power generating turbine today.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially inaugurated the power generating works of GERD.

High level government officials, those immensely contributed on the construction of the dam and distinguished guests have arrived to the dam site, Guba.

It is recalled that the Ethiopian government was announcing as power generation will be commenced after the completion of the construction of the two power generating turbines during the 10th year anniversary of the dam this year.

Ethiopia has so far disbursed over 100 billion birr for the construction of the GERD.

The dam has 145 meter height and 1,789 meter length with a capacity of holding 74 billion cubic meter of water.

According to sources, more than 60 percent of the Ethiopian population does not have access to electricity.

Despite Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt have started to negotiate on the GERD issues, they have not reached to a considerable agreement so far.
