Ethiopia secures 658.1 mln USD Exporting Coffee, Tea, Spices

Addis Ababa, February 17, 2022(Walta) – Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority announced that it has secured 658.1 million USD exporting 169,748.30 tons of coffee, Tea, and Spices during the past seven months.

The authority also disclosed that the export earnings have surpassed its plan to generate 461.81 million USD exporting 145,321.73 tons in the reported period.

According to the latest information from the Authority, it has obtained 658.1 million USD in a half year.

Authority Public Relation and Communication Director, Sahlemariam Gebremedhin said that the performance has shown big progress and the export has hit high records compared to the past similar period. It means that it secured 58,385.91 tons (52.43 percent) in terms of additional amount and 302.51 million USD (85.07 percent) in terms of revenue generated in that period.

Particularly, the coffee prices improve globally, utilizing alternative markets with maximizing productivity, implementing and controlling the low price of coffee that was sold at a low price, and discussion carried out with the concerned bodies to avoid the bureaucratic red tapes are the main secrets of this wonderful result, the Director highlighted.

To see Coffee exports separately, the Authority secured 645.10 million USD exporting 162,818.04 tons, though it planned to generate 451.33 million USD by exporting over 137,000 tons in the past seven months. Similarly, it has also big progress compared to the past similar period in terms of the total amount and additional revenue generated, which is 59,010.11tons and 299.01 million USD respectively.

According to the Director, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Japan are the three top Ethiopian coffee destination countries in that order. In this regard, Germany has shared 39,579.82 tons (24 percent) and generated 137.86 million USD (21 percent), Saudi Arabia has shared 24,563.07 (15 percent) tons and helped Ethiopia secure 86.14 million USD (13 percent) and Japan17,239.25 (11 percent) tons and 65.79 million USD (10 percent) are generated over the past seven months.

The remaining ones Belgium, the U.S., South Korea, Italy, China, France, and Taiwan ranked four up to ten in terms of being Ethiopia’s coffee destination in their respective orders. Those destination areas share 82 percent in terms of amount and 81 percent in terms of revenue generated to Ethiopia. All ten Ethiopia’s coffee destination areas have shared 84 percent in amount and 88 percent in terms of additional revenue compared with that of the past similar period, it was listed out.

It is to be recalled that the Authority has secured 525.6 million USD out of exported 138,552.16 tons of Coffee, Tea, and Spices the last six months, up to December. In that period, merely, the coffee export secured 100.62 million USD in November, according to the Ethiopian Herald.
