Ethiopian Embassy in Djibouti, IOM Repatriate 152 Migrants

Addis Ababa, August 19, 2022(Walta) – The Ethiopian Embassy in Djibouti, in collaboration with the office of the International Organization for Migration, facilitated the return of 152 vulnerable nationals over the last month.

About 19 of the vulnerable migrants are women, and 50 of them are under 18 years old, among whom 14 are children. Fourteen others who suffered from destitution, health-related problems, and abuses in transit and destination countries have been receiving medical assistance.

Among the 152 migrants, some of them entered Djibouti from Yemen, while the rest dreamed of crossing to the Middle East and changed their minds while in Djibouti. These migrants, who use Djibouti as a transit point like other Ethiopian migrants, are exploited by human traffickers, hoping for quick success in the Middle East and Gulf countries.

It is to be recalled that in the past three years alone, 118 nationals have lost their lives while they were on their way to Yemen due to six boat capsizing accidents.
