MoFA Condemns the Assassination of Shinzo Abe

Addis Ababa, July 8, 2022 (Walta) – Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has “strongly condemns’’ the assassination of Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has learned with dismay about the tragic death of Japan’s former Prime Minister and a good friend of Ethiopia, Mr. Shinzo Abe. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia strongly condemns the cowardly attack that claimed the life of Mr. Abe,” said the ministry in a statement today.

According to MoFA, Shinzo Abe played an instrumental role in deepening the historical ties between the two countries and took the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) to a new height.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia expresses its heartfelt condolences to the friendly people of Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and the bereaved family of the deceased over their tragic loss, said the ministry.

Shinzo Abe has died in hospital after he was shot at a political campaign. He was shot at twice while he was giving a speech in the southern city of Nara today.

Security officials at the scene has apprehended t41-year-old suspected gunman who is now in police custody.

Current Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned the attack as “barbaric and malicious”. He said that it cannot be tolerated.
