Nation Earns over 458 mln USD from Mineral Export

Addis Ababa, May 25, 2022(Walta) – Ethiopia has secured over 458 million USD over the last nine months of the current fiscal year exporting precious minerals chiefly gold, jewelry, and industrial minerals, the Ministry of Mines said.

Presenting the sector’s nine months performance before the House of Peoples’ Representatives yesterday, the Mines Minister Takele Uma stated consolidated activities have been carried out to enhance the contribution of the mining sector to the overall economic progress. “Overcoming the pressing hurdles, the mining sector is now booming.”

Noting the plan set to produce 6,553 kg of gold in the reported period, the Minister indicated 6,947 kg (106 percent of the plan) has been delivered to the National Bank of Ethiopia helping earn 439.67 million USD. The current gold production surpassed that of the last year’s same period by 12 percent.

Meanwhile, 2,317.05 kg of jewelry mines (103 percent of the plan) 79 tons of tantalum, 7,363 tons of industry mines, and 2,000 tons of sodium bromide were produced and exported in the reported period, according to EPA.

Also, the ministry planned to supply 4.8 million tons of industrial minerals to the domestic market and achieved 4.6 million tons. From its plan to supply 34.515 million cubic meters of construction inputs to the domestic market, the ministry achieved 36.84 million cubic meters.

For the reported period, the Ministry of Mines planned to generate 759.51 million Birr from various minerals supplied to the domestic market and 290.2 million Birr has been earned in this regard, Takele remarked.
