PM Abiy Ahmed Arrives in South Africa for BRICS Summit

Addis Ababa, August 23, 2023 (Addis Walta) Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and First Lady Zinash Tayachew accompanied by a ministerial delegation arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa for BRICS Summit.

The delegation traveled to South Africa to participate in the BRICS-Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue, the Office of the Prime Minister announced.

The Summit has been taking place between August 22 and 24 in Johannesburg, South Africa whereby expanding the bloc memberships will be top of the agenda.

 

Ethiopia, one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, formally applied for BRICS membership in June 2023. Including Ethiopia about 23 countries applied for accession to the block.

BRICS, which covers 42% of the world population and 23 % of global GDP, stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, created by taking the first letter of the name of member states.
