Russia Says Ethiopia’s Unilateral Humanitarian Ceasefire Provides Glimmer Hope

Addis Ababa, July 02, 2021 (Walta) – The Ethiopian government’s recent announcement of unilateral humanitarian ceasefire gives a glimmer of hope because it is the viable solution to solve the problem, Permanent Representative of the Russian to the United Nations said.

In his recent monthly press briefing, Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia also stated that: “We have to recognize that the bulk of humanitarian assistance is to the Tigray region is still being provided by the Ethiopian government. We also are advocating other humanitarian access for the international organizations as well.”

Regarding Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), he said all the three countries are Russia’s friends and nobody is happy that they could not yet agree on the issue. “We strongly advocate they do it in the trilateral way primarily based on 2015 Khartoum agreement. I don’t think we should discard the African Union (AU) mediation on that issue.”

“It is important that the AU is involved because as we say African solutions to African Problems and we hope that the issue will be resolved. We understand how sensitive it is for all three countries and we will be doing our best and the issue needs to be continued to be discussed by the three sides. We hope that an acceptable solution can be founded”, he added.
