Somalia Embraces its First Woman Presidential Candidate

Addis Ababa, July 15 2021 (Walta) – Somalia´s former Deputy Prime Minister Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adam turned into the first woman to file her candidacy for the presidential elections scheduled for October 10, 2021.

Haji Adam is already part of a list of over 40 candidates aspiring to the post of head of State in Somalia.

She was the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2014. She expressed her candidacy in a ceremony in Mogadishu on Wednesday.  Her decision to compete in the elections based on her foresight to change the course of politics in the nation.

She also indicated that as candidate for the opposition National Development Party, she will fight against corruption, increase business investments and give a new life to the country.

The vote will take place after the Federal Government and the authorities of the five states in the national territory reached a deal on May 27th for the holding the general election.

After signing the deal, the Prime Minister of Somalia, Mohamed Hussein Roble, said that implementing the agreement will allow to carry out elections in a transparent, free and fair way.

Since the overthrow Somalia’s autocratic president, Mohamed Siad Barre, by armed guerrillas in 1991, Somalia has been struggling to install a functional government.

However, the State has suffered from political, security, and social instability that has weakened the control of the central government authority that paved the way for radical Islamic groups to flourish.
