The Federal Transitional Justice Policy is in the Implementation Phase

Addis Ababa, May 10, 2024(Addis Walta) Minister of Justice Gideon Timotios (P.H.D) has announced that the Federal Government’s Transitional Justice Policy has passed various stages and is now in the implementation phase.

It is said that the policy will enable the “establishment of sustainable peace, reconciliation, rule of law, justice and democracy”.

Minister Tesfaye Beljge states that the government is determined to solve the deep-rooted problems that have arisen for a long time.

In his statement, he emphasized the importance of incorporating foreign experience while respecting indigenous knowledge and values.

Tewodros Mehret, President of the Supreme Court, said that the process of transitional justice is the appropriate response to the abuse, inhumane acts, and similar issues that society has suffered.

He stated that several nations have achieved accountability, justice, and reconciliation through transitional justice and urged Ethiopia to do the same through the process of transitional justice.

He also stated that transitional justice is suitable to prevent the recurrence of similar crimes and to create a society that believes in consultation.

It is to be recalled that on April 17th, 2024, the Council of Ministers approved the Transitional Justice Policy to establish a comprehensive and integrated transitional justice process suitable for the context of Ethiopia.
