UNFCC Hosts Pre-COP-27 Sensitization for Journalists

Addis Ababa, October 18, 2022 (Walta) – The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) hosted a discussion forum to engage and inform the media and civil society organization about the upcoming COP-27 meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

The event aimed to inform journalists about Africa’s priorities at COP-27, highlight key takeaways from COP-26, and share experiences on environmental reporting.

According to Climate Change Mitigation Expert, Simret Terera, the 27th COP is significant for two reasons. First, it is the second time an African country will host it. Second, it will be an African COP in focus and location.

She emphasized increased and more transparent climate funding, carbon markets that work for Africa, carbon trading returning to Africa, and loss and damage climate compensation for impacted communities as top priorities for Africa at the COP-27.

ACCER Award Winner, Journalist Demise Mekuriaw, discussed Ethiopian climate change journalist challenges which include lack of editorial priority, experts in the field, and resources for field reporting, among many others.

This contributes to Ethiopia’s limited media coverage of climate change, despite the country’s great efforts to create a climate-resilient green economy.
