Irrigation projects help tackle drought: PM

Prime Minster Hailemariam Desalegn said that the irrigation projects being built in difference parts of the country have helped tackle the drought facing the country.

The PM made this remark before House of Peoples Representatives (HPR) today while briefing the member of the House on the 2010 financial plan.

There are efforts in pastoral areas  to grow animal fodders using small scale irrigation, the PM said adding that  the pastoralist are stocking fodder in the fodder bank for use in dry seasons.

The PM said that more works should be done in terms of exploiting the underground water so that animal fodder could be grown to earn income from animal resources.

He also said that a nationwide campaign involving the local communities is being carried out against fall armyworm attacking the maize.

The PM also said that the government has distributed 13 mln quintals of fertilizers for this Meher production season.
