Government opens to work with the private sector on solar and geothermal power generation

Addis Ababa, June 15, 2015 (WIC) – CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) Azeb Asnake (Eng.) said during the second period of the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), the Government is open to work with the private sector on solar and geothermal power generation projects.

In an exclusive interview with fanabc.com, Azeb noted out of the planned 12,000 MW of electricity to be generated in GTP II, 2000 MW will be generated by Government-Private sector collaboration, with a particular focus on solar, geothermal and recycling waste in urban centers.

The private sector will be encouraged to generate electricity from these sources and provide the power to the national grid with reasonable prices. Azeb underscored the Government’s commitment to support investors in the sector.

Large industries will generate their own electricity demands by using solar energy during daytime in the GTP II period, she added.(FBC)
