Parties say joint council contributing towards democratization

Addis Ababa, June 15, 2015 (WIC) – Three political parties said that they will strengthen participation in the joint political parties’ council since it is helping to build democratic system.

Coalition for Unity and Democracy (Kinijit), Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP) and the ruling EPRDF, said they will contribute share to further strengthen the capacity of council.

EDP President Chane Kebede (Dr) said the Council contributed to nurture democratic culture among parties and make competition among parties base on principles.

He said EDP is ready to work with the party who will form government, though it declared that the preliminary results of the May elections are not acceptable.

EPRDF Public Relation Head Desta Tesfaw for his part said the council enabled parties address challenges.

In addition to election related issues, the Council creates a forum to discuss issues related to democracy and national interest.

It helped to build consensus among parties on national issues, he said.

According to Desta, EPRDF will continue to participate in the council and work to further strengthen it.

Coalition for Unity and Democracy (Kinijit) chairperson, Ayele Chamiso said his party will continue to participate in the council and work out challenges.

Kinijit is among the parties that accepted the preliminary results of the May elections. (FBC)
