Borena zone undertakes natural resource conservation estimated 885 million birr

Addis Ababa, 09 October 2015(WIC) – The Borena zone of  Oromiya Regional State undertook natural resource conservation work estimated to cost over 885.6 million birr in the pastoral Woreda of the zone, Office said.   
The office of water and soil conservation officer, Yetimwork Tesfaye, told WIC that their office undertook massive natural resource conservation work estimated to cost 885.6 million birr since 2012. According to her, the work accomplished includes water harvesting, and grazing grass planting for cattle apart from water and soil conservation work.

Yetimwork noted by mobilizing the community at large the zone has built close to 42 kilometers conservation terrace, planted 398 hectares of land with 75.4 million seedlings and  grass for cattle on 433 hectares of land.    
Since majority of the area in the zone is arid, the office has dug close to 42 thousand wells in order to ensure access to potable water, added Yetiwork.

According to her, more than 335 thousand citizens have participated in the natural resource conservation work in the zone. As a result of rehabilitation of the environment, the community is starting to reap the benefit by engaging on bee hiving, getting animal feed, reduced water erosion and re-emergence of streams that previously disappeared.
