Agency pays 339.9 million birr for car accident compensation

Addis Ababa, 20 November 2015(WIC) – The Insurance Fund Administration Agency said it has paid 339.9 million birr compensation for damages sustained on the lives, bodies and vehicles of people.

Director of the Agency, Yisaq Abera, told Walta that the agency, in collaboration with other stakeholders, has paid the compensation in accordance with the proclamation ratified for third party insurance.

He noted the payment was delivered both by the Agency and insurance organization and the agency has paid more than 3.6 million birr for hit and run cases that caused damage on lives, bodies and properties. The agency has paid about 210 thousand birr for accidents caused by vehicles of the Ministry of Defense, he added.

Yisaq said that the agency also has paid about 336.2 million birr for compensation for damages caused by vehicles with third party insurance contract. The payment includes emergency and regular medication cares.

“We have created awareness enhancing forums at different times and this has become fruitful that more people are becoming aware of our role,” he remarked.

About 6.4 million birr it transferred to accounts of health centers that gave emergency and other levels of medication services, he noted.
In accordance of the consensus reached with the Road Transport Authority, the effort to make all vehicles under the umbrella of the third party insurance scheme has become successful, Yisaq said

The Agency has collected 181.2 million birr from third party insurance fund. During the second GTP period the Agency has planned to further create more awareness on the use of third party insurance fund, and make all vehicles members of this scheme.

He urged the public to know its right to use third party insurance and properly benefit from it. In terms providing emergency health care services, there are gaps to be filled and all stakeholders should work together to fill these gaps, he added.
