SNNP tailors strategy to supervise aid supply

Addis Ababa, 19 January, 2016(WIC) – The Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s regional state said it has prepared a strategy to closely follow up aid supply from grass root level.

The regional office of disaster prevention and preparedness Head, Abera Wila, told WIC the strategy is aimed at following up the aid supply to areas hit by the drought from kebele up to regional level.

A team with members drawn from health extension, agriculture and the Woreda administrator is established to report every three days to the Zone, he underscored.

A Committee chaired by the region’s president meets every Friday to see the report and make the necessary remedies for problems that happened during aid supply, he said.

Abera noted that in some areas some people have shown dependency on the aid and effort is made to change this tendency and encourage people to look for options that can enable to ensure food security.

More than 756 thousand people are in need of emergency food aid and the region has planned to support more than 761 thousand people via the safety net program, he added.

About 191 million birr support is provided to the region from the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural resource development, the Ministry of Animals and Fish resource development and the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity. The Zones in the region have also allocated 30.2 million birr for the supply of potable water and animal fodder. The people in the region have contributed labor that is estimated to cost 69 million birr for the effort to harvest water, he explained.
