Intellectuals reveal Egypt’s backing behind violence in Ethiopia

Intellectuals have revealed the presence of Egypt’s backing in the violence orchestrated by some groups after hijacking the legitimate question of the people for good governance.

As government admitted, there are questions for good governance which are resulted from the economic growth of the country. However, some groups who have their own objectives utilized these questions to create disturbances.

Recently, Prime Minister Hailemariam said, “forces who do not want to see Ethiopia exploit its natural resources are indirectly participating in the violence, backing the group financially.” A video verifying the Premier’s speech appeared in Cairo, the capital of Egypt.

The speech delivered in front of members of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), a group designated as a terrorist organization by the House of People’s Representatives (HPR), shows Egypt’s support for the current situation in Ethiopia.

The violence, which was seen for months, also continued last Sunday and led to the tragic end at the annual Irrecha celebration in Bishoftu.

According to Nahusenay Belay, a federalism teacher and a third degree candidate at the Addis Ababa University (AAU), “it should not be surprising if someone wants to use the opportunity when such questions arose.”

“Egypt’s involvement came from its desire to prevent us from developing our natural resource -the Abay river,” he said.

A geography teacher at Kotebe University College and who is known for conducting several researches on Abay, Assist Prof. Berhanu Belachew, said Egyptian won’t refrain from using all opportunities at any time.

Nahusenay on his part said “we shouldn’t be tricked by a thought that there would be an immediate shift in system when a government is changed in Egypt.”

Egypt came to negotiation on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) simply because it couldn’t defy the recognition Ethiopia has gained in the international fora following its economic growth, he said.

Egypt’s recent move targeted particular nations.

Last Sunday, an Egyptian news channel, Al Ghad Al Araby, repeatedly broadcast the violence occurred at Irrecha festival after inviting a guest.

The intellectual invited by the news channel was heard saying “this government is worried because both the Amhara and Oromo nations stood together. It couldn’t cope with the problem,’’

According to Nahusenay, “Ethiopians have no problem in standing in unison on common national issues despite the problem in handling of both nations by the previous leaders.”

African Affairs Senior Researcher at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Abdulaziz Ahmed, said history tell us that there were Egyptians behind the problems Ethiopia faced in the past. Currently, there is alliance between those who want to create chaos in Ethiopia and Egypt.

Those who want to create violence say “we are struggling for our rights.” Egypt on its part wants to see a weak and failed Ethiopia.

According to Nahusenay, the coalition could not be successful.  Berhanu on his part said the coalition is impermanent. But Ethiopians should know the intention behind the scene.

Both intellectuals recommended the government to resist external venerability by reducing the internal one.
