Addis Ababa, May 8, 2023 (Walta) – Ethiopia and Malta signed a memorandum of understanding today to cooperate in aviation, tourism, and diplomatic training.

FDRE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, and Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Malta, Ian Borg (PhD), signed the agreement in Addis Ababa.

The two sides discussed on ways to boost bilateral, regional, and international cooperation. Following their discussion, the two sides made a joint press statement.

Demeke extended his gratitude for Malta’s diplomatic support in the last two years, as well as the country’s decision to open its embassy in Addis Ababa last year.

Foreign Minister Ian Borg has confirmed that Malta, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, is ready to take the interests of Ethiopia and Africa into account during its tenure.

Ian Borg stated that Ethiopia is a geostrategic player in the Horn of Africa and he made his first visit to Addis Ababa.

The agreement signed today will set the foundation to further improve relations between his country and Ethiopia and lays the groundwork for future collaboration between Ethiopia and Malta, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia indicated.
