Ethiopia Maximizes Export Capacity – PM Abiy Ahmed

Addis Ababa, February 22, 2022 (walta) – Prime Minister Abiy at the 3rd Emergency Session of the House of Peoples Representatives said that Ethiopia’s export capacity has increased by 33 percent in the last two years.

The Prime Minister is responding to questions raised from members of the House.

The Premier noted that the economic progress in the last six months should be weighed considering pressures which significantly impacted the economy. The operations in the North region, droughts, and floods, as well as impacts of COVID-19 could be mentioned among constraints.

Significant macroeconomic measures are required to close the budget imbalance. He further said that when the export exceeds import the country benefits much.

Prime Minister Abiy also mentioned that the Banks’ net value, which was 1.8 trillion ETB six months ago, has now reached to 2 trillion ETB.

According to the Prime Minister, the wealth of stakeholders and  loans to private investors have improved over the last six months.

It was planned to collect 185.8 billion birr in the past six months, but it has achieved 171.3 billion birr; as a result 92 percent of the plan could be achieved, he added.

On the other hand, the country’s expenditure over the past six months has increased by 39 percent as compared to the same period of last year.

Ethiopia’s exports has increased by 26 percent in the first six months of this fiscal year, earning 1.9 billion USD, it was learned.
