Ethiopia-Sudan Rail Project Joint Committee Meeting Underway in Khartoum

Addis Ababa May 18, 2021(Walta) – The joint technical committee meeting on the feasibility study of the Ethio-Sudan Standard Guage Railway Project kicked off in Khartoum.

Yibeltal Aemero, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of F.D.R.E in Sudan, and Mohamed Basher, Undersecretary for Minister of Transport of the Republic of Sudan delivered opening remarks at the meeting.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Yibeltal stressing the longstanding People to People relations as well as strong economic and social ties between Ethiopia and Sudan underscored the critical role railway transport plays in strengthening economic integration between the two countries and the region.

Ambassador Yibeltal further stressed the need to see beyond current temporary challenges and to focus on fields of strategic infrastructure development and economic cooperation that benefit the peoples of Ethiopia and Sudan.

In this regard, Ambassador reiterated the commitment of the Government of Ethiopia to the successful completion of the Ethio-Sudan Railway project and stated the holding of the joint technical meeting during this period is a clear testament of the strategic relations that exists between the two brotherly countries.

Undersecretary Mohamed Bashir on his part expressed Sudan’s gladness to hosting the joint technical committee meeting and stated that railway transport is an important transport infrastructure system that will further strengthen the economic relations of the peoples of Ethiopia and Sudan. In this regard, the Undersecretary reiterated the focus provided to the successful completion of the project by the Government of Sudan.

According to the embassy of Ethiopia in Sudan, the Joint Technical Committee is expected to evaluate and approve the feasibility study of the Ethio-Sudan Standard gauge railway project presented by the consulting firm during the meeting.
