Addis Ababa, July 19, 2023 (Walta) The massive Green Legacy drive conducted on 17th July 2023 both at home and Ethiopian Diplomatic and Consular Missions overseas which successfully planted 566 million seedlings is part and parcel of Ethiopia’s wider green diplomacy imperative.

During a weekly Press Briefing to local and international media houses earlier today, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Meles Alem said, Green Legacy Initiative (GLI) tree-planting campaigns were conducted across the country on 17th July, 2023.

By planting a total of 567 million trees in a single day, fellow Ethiopians not only broke their previous national record but also made Ethiopia a role model in the efforts to forge a climate resilience economy in Africa and beyond, the Spokesperson added.

Citing the fact that the 77th United Nations General Assembly adopted the GLI as a side agenda and a flagship project of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) among Member States, the spokesperson said, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is striving towards soliciting the support of the international community to grow its impact far and wide.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the GLI is Ethiopia’s continued commitment to championing green diplomacy on the world stage and combatting environmental degradation as well as climate change effects and disasters from it in tandem with increasing agricultural productivity, he added.

Ambassador Meles also expressed his appreciation to the Addis-based diplomatic corps and members of various international organizations for partaking in the Ethiopian Green Legacy Initiative.
