More than 135 Thousand Metric Tons of Food Aid Reaches Tigray

Addis Ababa, June 23, 2022 (Walta) – More than 135 Thousand metric tons of food aid has reached Tigray Regional State in a year said the National Disaster Risk Management Commission.

The Commissioner of Disaster Risk Management, Mitiku Kassa, said that about 5.2 million people in the region need humanitarian aid.

According to the commissioner, the aid includes food, non-food, cash transfer, and fuel.

In order to facilitate the smooth flow of humanitarian aid in the region, the government has allowed a convoy of 300 trucks per day, he said.

In addition to Tigray, more than 19 million quintals of emergency humanitarian aid are being distributed to people faced with climate-induced drought in different parts of the country.  Out of the total emergency aid, 540 thousand metric tons is food aid, he added.
