Mozambique Gets Seat at UNSC

Addis Ababa, January 05, 2023 (Walta) – Mozambique welcomed at a two years term non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council(UNSC).
This is its first time in the country’s history to join the 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent membership at the UNSC with unanimous vote in June 2022.
Many countries consider winning a council seat as a signature diplomatic accomplishment that can raise a nation’s global profile and afford small countries a bigger voice than they might otherwise have in the major international peace and security issues of the day.
Mozambican Ambassador Pedro Comissário Afonso called this chance as “a historic date”.
The UNSC tasked to deploy peacekeeping missions, approving sanctions and speaks out on conflicts, and surveying issues such as terrorism and arms control.
Countries often campaigned for several years to get elected. About 60 countries have never get the chance to be elected even for once since the council formation in 1946.
The five latest members-Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland- are replacing India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway whose terms ended December 31.
The other current two-year members are Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and United Arab Emirates.
