PM Abiy Ahmed Reiterates Commitment of Ethiopia to Government, People of Somalia

Addis Ababa, June 10, 2022 (Walta) – Addressing the inauguration of President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reiterated the commitment of Ethiopia to the people and government of Ethiopia.

“As you start your endeavor to rebuild Somalia we will be with you. And I’m sure you will succeed,” the Prime Minister said.

“I am extremely happy to see a smooth transition of power in Somalia. The incremental steps taken to harnessing democratic process within the whole region will positively shape our collective standing.”

The government and people of Ethiopia, in the last few years, have strengthened ties with brothers and sisters in Somalia. This has come as a result of a change in Ethiopia’s foreign policy, which is rooted in collaboration for mutual growth and development, Abiy underlined.

“We don’t view our progress as a nation separate from that of our neighbors for we truly understand that a neighbor at peace with itself is an ally for our paths to prosperity,” Premier stated.

“Our regional integration aspirations are focused on maximizing our existing cultural, economic, and political assets.”

I have no doubt that with your leadership we will further consolidate and multiply the gains we have made in diplomacy in the past few years.

Somalia has continued to see an opportunity for progress in development despite all of the many challenges that the nation is confronted with.

Prime Minister Abiy underscored that the government of Ethiopia is fully behind Somalia in implementing the one person, one vote universal suffrage in 2025 after 58 years.

“I express and reiterate the commitment of the government of Ethiopia to the people and government of Somalia at large.”

“Ethiopia is committed to working together in a more robust relationship to achieve a better future for our people, and to determine our mutual destiny together.”

President Hassan Sheikh, for his part, pledged a strong commitment to realizing an economically resilient and peaceful Somalia, according to FBC.

“We are committed to forging strong cooperation with countries of the Horn of Africa and the rest of the world at large in the areas of trade, economic, and the fight against terrorism,” President Hassan Sheikh added.
